How to Prepare for Your Lip Enhancement Procedure
Dr. Michael Wolfeld, a plastic surgeon located near the Upper East Side and Midtown areas of Manhattan New York, explains what you can expect from a lip enhancement procedure.
How do I know if I’m a good candidate for lips enhancement?
If you think your lips are thinner than normal, or thinner than you would like, lip augmentation may be a good procedure for you. Lips enhancement improves the contour and fullness of lips for a younger, healthier appearance. Lip augmentation may not be appropriate for patients with current cold sores, certain diseases such as diabetes or lupus, or someone with a blood clotting problem.
How do I know what is the right procedure for me?
There are several options available for improving the shape of your lips. Enhancement is often achieved with one of the most popular options involving the injection of a hyaluronic acid filler such as Juvederm® or Restylane®. These fillers can be injected into the lips, creating a plumper and more sensuous appearance without surgery. Hyaluronic injectables are the least expensive method of lips enhancement, however the effects are temporary. Fat injections may also be performed in the office setting, but will require a liposuction procedure to harvest the fat. The liposuction is minimally invasive and performed in a localized area. If you are already planning to have liposuction, it may be a good time to consider plumping your lips, using transferred fat. Fat taken from the liposuctioned area can be injected (fat grafted) to almost any area. Lips are among the most requested areas to be enhanced using this method. Fat injection may be a permanent option for lips enhancement.
How should I prepare for the lips enhancement appointment?
Prior to a lip enhancement procedure, one should avoid certain medications that may lead to bruising such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, or any of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkillers.
How long does the procedure take?
If you elect to undergo an injectable filler such as Juvederm® or Restylane®, the procedure will last approximately 30 – 45 minutes. For a fat transfer procedure for lips enhancement, the procedure may last an hour to an hour and a half depending upon each individual’s lips. The procedure is individualized and tailored for each person’s specific needs and wishes.
Is it painful?
Prior to the procedure you will have a dental block performed that will numb your upper and lower lips. The injection of the numbing medication may cause some mild discomfort, but following this injection, the actual placement of the filler substance in your lips will be painless.
Will I need someone to come with me?
No, you do not need someone to come with you to the appointment.
Will I have to stay overnight?
No, this is an office procedure and you will be able to go home following the procedure. There will be specific instructions to go home with and you will be able to contact Dr. Wolfeld at any time for questions or concerns.
How long until I’m able to eat and drink normally after a lips enhancement procedure?
Your lips will be numb for several hours following the procedure. I would recommend that you do not eat following the procedure until you have full sensation in your lips.
Will it look like I’ve had surgery? For how long?
Your lips will be swollen following your lip augmentation procedure. Most women find that the swelling has subsided considerably within 3 days. Applying ice immediately afterwards will minimize the swelling. Once this swelling subsides, you will be left with full, plump, youthful lips.
Is it permanent?
Lips enhancement with Juvederm® or Restylane® is not permanent. A fat injection procedure can be a permanent option.
