Fat Grafting VS. Liposuction

Dr. Wolfeld discusses the differences between fat grafting procedures and Liposuction. New York City and Hackensack NJ patients who are interested in either procedure or both can call our cosmetic surgeon Dr. Wolfeld and his staff, at (212) 281-1000 to schedule an appointment today!

1) What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that works best for patients who have fat deposits in certain regions of the body that cannot be corrected appropriately by diet and exercise. This is a modality to assist in body contouring and not a method for overall weight loss. Liposuction involves injecting a solution of local anesthesia into the area that will be treated. This solution aids in numbing the region as well as minimizes bleeding and bruising. Small incisions are made and a cannula, which is attached to a vacuum-like machine, is inserted and removes the fatty deposits.

2) What is a fat transfer/injection?

Fat grafting is a procedure that uses your own fatty tissue to fill in lines and creases, or it may be used to augment aged and hollowed out regions of your face. Contour depressions, hollow cheeks and temples, and laugh lines can be signs of aging and fat augmentation may improve these signs. Fat grafting and transfer is also used by Dr. Wolfeld to augment the buttock for enhancement in individuals with a deficient buttock region.
Fat grafting to the face requires a limited liposuction procedure under local anesthesia. The fat can be taken from your abdomen, thighs, buttocks or elsewhere. The fat is then purified and prepared for injection. The fat is then injected into areas that are sunken or lacking tissue volume. A fat injection for buttock augmentation is performed in an accredited operating room under general anesthesia.

3) What are the most common areas of the body for a liposuction procedure?

Fat can be removed from the stomach area, back, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, neck, chin, cheeks, or upper arms. Most frequently, the abdomen, flanks and thighs are suctioned. Patients are generally very pleased with the results.

4) What are the most common areas of the body for fat transfers or fat injection?

The most common regions for fat transfers are to the face (cheeks, temples, laugh lines, jawline) and to the buttock regions. The volume needed for the buttock is significantly more than for that of the face; therefore, if an injection is being performed to the buttock, this will be performed under general anesthesia. A fat injection to the face can be performed as an office procedure under local anesthesia.

5) What is the appeal of getting both liposuction and fat injection?

The appeal for both liposuction and fat injection is that unwanted fat can be removed from one area and injected into an area where greater enhancement and sculpting is desired.

6) Which procedure requires more invasive surgery?

Both procedures are invasive, and both procedures can vary as to the extent they are performed. Liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia in the office for a small region and it can also be performed under general anesthesia in the operating room for larger and multiple areas. The same process is true of fat injections as well.

7) What is recovery like for both liposuction and fat transfers/injections?

The length of time it takes for liposuction or fat injection recovery varies greatly among individuals.
The first few days after surgery you should participate in light activities. No strenuous activities are recommended. Remember to drink an adequate amount of fluids so as to avoid dehydration.

During the first few days following liposuction or fat injections, patients experience varying degrees of swelling and bruising. Bruising typically disappears within 7 to 10 days. Stitches are usually removed within a week of surgery.
In many instances, you will be able to resume most of your normal activities within 10 – 14 days.
