Tips for a Healthy Recovery after Liposuction

Cosmetic surgeon in New York, NY, Dr. Michael Wolfeld, shares his tips for a healthy recovery after having liposuction surgery.

Q. What would be the most important tip for a healthy recovery after Liposuction?
A. It is essential to stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids

Q. Are heating pads, ice-packs or other skin applications helpful during recovery?
A. After surgery, you should expect to feel swollen and bruised which may last up to 2 weeks. During this time you should avoid using heating pads, ice-packs or other skin applications. It’s best to wear compression garments for the liposuctioned region for 4-8 weeks, depending on the amount of swelling. In most cases, you will see an improvement immediately after surgery and you will notice that you continue to improve for the next several months as the swelling subsides.

Q. Is there anything the patient can do to help with the healing process during recovery?
A. It’s very important to keep on top of cleaning the area by changing bandages as advised by your surgeon and to also take pain medication as needed.

Q. What should a patient avoid doing during recovery?
A. Be careful not to bend over or lift heavy objects for 2 weeks following surgery.

Q. Should the patient avoid any type of exercise during recovery?
A. It is important to avoid strenuous exercise for 2 weeks following surgery. However, walking is very important immediately after surgery. You are encouraged to walk the day of surgery and every day thereafter to minimize the chance of a blood clot.

Q. Are there any types of diets that may be helpful towards a healthy recovery?
A. Eating healthy food is always a good idea. The best option would be to avoid salty foods which may lead to increased swelling.
