Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) in New York by Plastic Surgeon Dr. Michael Wolfeld

At the time of your initial consultation, Dr. Wolfeld will sit down with you at length, and discuss every detail of your tummy tuck operation.  You will always feel comfortable and confident with Dr. Wolfeld performing your tummy. The abdominoplasty is a commonly performed surgical procedure to get rid of excess skin and fat in the tummy area (tummy tuck), and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. In patients who have had one or more pregnancies, or who have lost large amounts of weight, the skin and fat in the abdomen can become loose and flaccid. No amount of exercise will get rid of this hanging, loose skin. At the same time, because the muscles of the abdomen have been stretched, your belly can push forward from the inside, creating an unsightly bulge of the abdomen.  Abdominoplasty can tighten these muscles to help create a flat, firm abdominal wall. At the same time, any excess loose, hanging skin and fat is removed. Frequently liposuction will be combined with abdominoplasty to remove unwanted fat from the hips and other areas. This is a popular operation in both women and men.

The abdominoplasty procedure begins with an incision that is made in your pubic region below the bikini line.  Dr. Wolfeld will make this incision only as long as it needs to be to remove the maximum possible fat and skin from your abdominal wall during a tummy tuck. Dr. Wolfeld, will make this incision as discreetly as possible, and any residual scarring can be easily hidden under clothing, swimwear, and low riding jeans or underwear. Dr. Wolfeld will separate the navel from the skin and then tighten the underlying muscles, a step that narrows the waistline and firms up the midsection. Excess fat is removed, the navel is repositioned, and the skin is pulled taut around the stomach. The incision is then closed with sutures. The entire procedure typically takes about two to four hours to complete and is usually performed under general anesthesia. A tummy tuck can be performed on an outpatient basis, and it is essential that you arrange for someone to take you home and stay with you after the procedure.

Patients can expect some swelling in the abdomen for a few days after the procedure; however, any pain and discomfort can be alleviated with medication. Although strenuous exercise should be avoided for six weeks after surgery, patients should take brisk walks soon after the procedure in order to prevent blood clots. All postoperative instructions should be followed carefully in order to allow the abdomen to heal properly and to achieve optimal results. Scarring from the procedure will never disappear completely, but it will fade over time. Depending on the extent of the abdominoplasty, the patient should be able to return to work after two to three weeks.

Plastic surgeon Michael Wolfeld, will be with you every step of the way during your recovery, and if you have any questions, at any time, you will always be able to contact him.

Mini Abdominoplasty

A mini abdominoplasty (mini  tummy tuck) is a quicker, less invasive procedure than the full tummy tuck. NYC NY and Hackensack NJ Patients who have just a small amount of excess abdominal skin and those who are experiencing minor skin sagginess due to aging are often good candidates for a mini abdominoplasty.

The procedure requires a short incision that is made across the lower abdomen. The navel does not need to be separated from the skin. After the incision is made, underlying abdominal muscles are tightened and excess fat is removed. The skin is then pulled tight around the midsection and trimmed to create a fit, toned appearance. Mini abdominoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis, typically taking about two to three hours to complete. Patients generally experience some discomfort and swelling for a few days after the procedure; however, any residual pain can be controlled with medication. Scarring from a mini abdominoplasty is minimal and Dr. Wolfeld will make every effort to make the incisions as discreet as possible. Strenuous activities should be avoided for about six weeks after the procedure. Patients are usually able to resume normal daily activities within a few days after a mini abdominoplasty.
