Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) New York City
If you've been hiding under loose shirts ever since puberty, you don't have to feel ashamed for much longer. Gynecomastia, or enlargement of male breast tissue, is a significant source of embarrassment for many men. Reluctant to discuss their concerns, most men are likely to try and hide their condition. Many men avoid the beach, Jacuzzi, pool, sauna and other activities where their chest would be exposed. Once the unwanted breast tissue is removed, the confidence level of most men increases significantly. Breast reduction for men is a much more common procedure than you might think. Gynecomastia is a common condition that affects more than 40% of all males. It is most common around puberty and can involve one or both sides. Although certain drugs (e.g. estrogen-containing medications, anabolic steroids, etc.) or specific medical conditions can cause male breast enlargement, in most cases, the exact cause is unknown. Ideal candidates for surgery will be healthy and close to normal weight with good skin and muscle tone.
Depending upon the extent of the breast enlargement and the proportion of fat and breast gland present, the recommended surgical treatment may vary. Glandular tissue may require surgical excision, while fatty tissue may require liposuction techniques. If glandular tissue is to be excised, an incision is made in an inconspicuous area (e.g. around the areola or in the underarm area) and tissue is then removed around the breast. Sometimes, excess skin may have to be removed in order to ensure a more normal and firmer breast contour.
Reshaping the fatty male breast by Dr. Wolfeld includes liposculpture which may require use of both ultrasound assisted liposuction and power assisted liposuction. Cannulas, inserted through tiny incisions, are used to remove the fatty tissues to give you a flat, firm chest. Gynecomastia is performed as an outpatient procedure in a surgical facility, usually with general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes about two hours but may take more or less time depending upon the individual and the specific techniques used.
Following surgery, the breast area will be swollen and bruised. An elastic pressure garment will be needed for the first several weeks. Most patients recover quite quickly from surgical treatment of gynecomastia. If liposuction alone is performed, many will return to activities in a few days. If glandular tissue needs to be removed through an incision, then recover might be prolonged up to 2 weeks. These patients will generally be able to resume more vigorous activities at that time. Occasionally a drain may be inserted into the surgical area. This will be removed in the office once the volume of liquid that drains out is low enough.
Dr. Wolfeld’s patients say that male breast reduction surgery enables them to wear any type of clothing they want, helps them to feel more confident at the beach or pool, and helps them to improve their overall self image and self confidence.
