Breast Reduction by Dr. Wolfeld in New York, NY
Frequently, women with very large or pendulous breasts experience discomfort from bra strap skin irritation, the inconvenience of finding clothing that fits, restriction of strenuous physical activity as well as a variety of medical problems such as back and neck pain, hard to control skin rashes and even breathing problems. Women with large breasts are also frequently self-conscious about breast size. Dr. Wolfeld can help by reducing and reshaping your breasts which can alleviate most or all of these problems. A breast reduction procedure involves removal of excess breast tissue and tightening the breast skin making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. The goal is for Dr. Wolfeld to give you smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of your body.
Breast reduction is a same day procedure that can take from 3 to 4 hours. It is performed in an ambulatory surgical facility. Nearly always performed under general anesthesia, you will be asleep throughout the entire process. Breast reduction surgery is most commonly performed through a keyhole-shaped incision around the areola that allows the removal of excess fat, glandular tissue and skin. If necessary, the areola can be reduced by removing skin around it. The vertical incisions are then brought together to reshape the smaller breast. Occasionally, an incision underneath the breast along the crease is needed. The nipple and areola attached to the underlying tissue are moved to a higher, more aesthetic location. Sometimes liposuction is combined with breast reduction to improve the shape of the breast and armpit areas. During your consultation with Dr. Wolfeld, he will explain to you in detail exactly where your scars will be placed. He will formulate an individual treatment plan just for your breasts.
While the incision lines are permanent scars, they will fade over time, and they can be hidden under most swimsuits. You will experience a new, smaller breast shape that is no longer painful and enables more physical activity. Following your procedure, you will receive a surgical bra to wear and you may require drains. You may feel tired or sore up to a week after your procedure and there will be some bruising and swelling. You will be directed to start light walking as soon as possible to prevent blood clots or other complications. Light activity can usually be resumed within a few days of surgery. Healing will continue for several weeks as the breast shape settles.
Breast reduction often provides women with the motivation and freedom to pursue a healthier lifestyle. If you are ready to look and feel better than ever, you may schedule a private consultation with Dr. Wolfeld by calling 212-281-1000
