Chin Augmentation by Dr. Wolfeld in Manhattan, NY
Balance is extremely important in the consideration of any type of aesthetic facial plastic surgery. As we analyze facial form and beauty, multiple different views are necessary to achieve an overall aesthetic concept. The nose and chin are major features that contribute to the profile, and any excess or deficiency in either feature can detract from the overall appearance. Visually, a poorly defined chin can make the nose and upper teeth look more prominent. The jaw and neckline often appear weak and undefined. A person may also have lost chin definition due to the natural aging process. A well defined chin helps give balance and harmony to the face. Chin augmentation (chin implant) is a procedure that improves the total facial balance of an individual with a receding chin.
During your consultation with Dr. Wolfeld, your chin projection and width will be evaluated in relationship to the rest of your facial features. Chin augmentation may provide more projection, fullness or both. The implant is composed of a safe, non-reactive silastic material that promotes attachment to the surrounding soft tissue. A variety of sizes and shapes are available to suit the individual need of the patient. Dr. Wolfeld will make a recommendation of an implant size and projection based on the achievement of facial balance. A chin augmentation may be performed alone or in conjunction with other aesthetic facial plastic surgery procedures such as nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) or a facelift. Chin augmentation surgery can significantly enhance the result of these other procedures, improving one's overall appearance.
This procedure may be done under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Most often if this surgery is combined with other procedures, general anesthesia is recommended. The procedure is relatively straightforward: a small incision is made under the chin or inside the mouth and a biologically safe pocket is created under the muscles of the chin. Next, a chin implant is placed in this pocket and fixated to the bone. Chin implants are usually made from silicone. The incision, whether inside the mouth or under the chin, is then closed with fine sutures. This procedure lasts about an hour and you will remain in the recovery area for approximately one to two hours after chin augmentation surgery.
Once your procedure is complete, sterile bandages and dressings will be applied to cover any incisions and to support the position of the implant during initial healing. Initial healing may include swelling or numbness and discomfort that can be controlled with medication. A return to light, normal activity is possible as soon as you feel ready. Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling dissipates and tissue surrounding the implant heals. After 2 weeks, the implant will be immovable. If the incision is made inside the mouth, no scar is apparent. If the incision site is under the chin, it almost always becomes quickly imperceptible.
